Dover International Speedway aka Dover Downs, opened in 1969 as a multi purpose facility. The Dover track operates as a motor sports facility and also as a horse harness racing track. This 1 mile long concrete track (most tracks are asphalt) has seating capacity for 140,000. This “Monster Mile” track is noted for being very hard on the racing cars and due to its exact one mile length technically is neither a super speedway nor a short track.
The harness track and the speedway at one point were owned and operated by one entity, Dover Downs Entertainment, but with the encouragement of NASCAR, in 2002 separated the two entertainment groups, one Dover Motor Sports and the other would be the horse and gaming division. Dover Motor Sports currently owns and operates three other tracks, Nashville Super Speedway, Gateway International Raceway and Memphis Motor Sports Park.
All Cup races that were held at Dover International Speedway were 500 miles until Nascar changed the rules that only speedways over one mile in length could host 500 mile events requiring Dover to host 400 mile races.
Dover International Raceway proudly hosts two Nascar Sprint Cup events annually: The Dover 400 in June followed by the Dodge Dealers 400 in September.
